The mining sector plays a key role in the economy, in particular through the 30,000 direct and indirect jobs it supports, mainly in the Nord-du-Québec, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Côte-Nord regions.

The Québec government wants to ensure the sustainable development of the mining sector and has adopted strategies and guidelines to support existing sectors and develop new sectors, prevent or mitigate environmental impacts, and promote citizen participation and transparency.

As part of this approach, the Québec government has implemented its Strategic Vision for Mining in Québec, published in 2016, a unifying vision of mining development in Québec and the outcome of consultations with Québec’s mining development stakeholders.

Today, given the growing importance of so-called critical and strategic minerals, the Québec government is launching a review of Québec’s role in the development of critical and strategic minerals.
