Current news on government actions in mining development

Several news stories relating to the government’s involvement in mining development have made headlines these past few months. In case you missed them, here are a few press releases and other news that might be of interest.

Québec moves up to No. 6 spot in Fraser Institute’s annual ranking

The results of the Fraser Institute’s 2014 annual survey, which were revealed on February 24, 2015, were cause for celebration among Québec’s mining community. The Minister for Mines, Mr. Luc Blanchette, commented on the welcome news in a press release (in French).

International Symposium on Northern Development

From February 25 to 27, 2015, the city of Québec hosted the first International Symposium on Northern Development. The symposium gathered together representatives from northern countries, academic circles, northern populations (including aboriginal nations), business people and companies. The goal was to share knowledge, experiences and visions for sustainable development in the north. According to the press release issued at the close of the symposium, “the Premier and the Secretary General emphasized that the Symposium was a success, not only because of the number of participants but also because of the range of subjects and points of view discussed.”  Click here to read the full version.

PDAC 2015

In early March, the Government of Québec had a booth at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada convention in Toronto. The Minister for Mines, Mr. Luc Blanchette, took the opportunity to talk about Québec’s mining development outlook in a number of different forums.

On our way towards a new strategic vision for mining development

On March 6 of this year, the Minister for Mines, Mr. Luc Blanchette, issued a press release announcing the end of a consultation process that paved the way to the development and implementation in 2015 of a new strategic vision for mining development.

A green light for developing the Arnaud mine

A story that was written about extensively in mid-March was the government’s announcement that it had given the green light to the Ministère du Développement Durable, de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les Changements Climatiques (MDDELCC) to issue a certificate of authorization to Mine Arnaud for its apatite mining project.

Unveiling of “Plan Nord Toward 2035, 2015–2020 Action Plan”

At the unveiling of “Plan Nord Toward 2035, 2015–2020 Action Plan” on April 8 of this year, Québec Premier Philippe Couillard, accompanied by several ministers, made several economic, social and cultural announcements on northern development.

Measures to support mining development in Québec

Following the unveiling of Plan Nord Toward 2035, the Minister for Mines, Mr. Luc Blanchette, discussed the measures in the Québec government’s 2015–2016 budget that relate to the mining sector.
