Transparency measures

Corruption and perceived corruption undermine public trust in governments, businesses and markets. In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the United States and the European Union adopted measures to promote transparency in the mining, petroleum and gas extraction industries. The federal government adopted the Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act in December 2014. Québec had already adopted transparency measures in the Mining Act (CQLR, chapter M-13.1) in December 2013.

The purpose of the Act respecting transparency measures in the mining, oil and gas industries is to reinforce business integrity and ensure that citizens are better informed about and benefit from projects. A further purpose is to ensure that the rules are fair for businesses.
